Just a quick post to say welcome.

And also that I have created a back-up journal over at GreatestJournal:

http://the-last-ship.greatestjournal.com/

So in case the site goes down and LiveJournal goes down or we all decamp to GJ, that venue will also be there for us. Thank you to elderberrywine for the suggestion!

Okay fine. Don't know how much help I'll be, but I'll do what I can if you tell me what to do.

Great idea! Thanks, guys!

I'll upload stories once NaNo is done and/or I'm done in.

Do you have any preferences of where people post "help" requests -- here or at the site?
baranduin
Nov. 11th, 2007 09:22 pm (UTC)
That's a good question! If you post at the site, then it generates an email to admin so that's good. But here -- well, more people would see it, wouldn't they, including admin?

For myself, as long as I am made aware of issues people are having, which works with emails to admin or with posts here, I'm good.

Of course it's all up to the members how they go about asking for help and I know some people will just ask amongst themselves. Which is fine except that I'd really like to see things. I think you had an issue today or yesterday that you talked to Claudia about and ended up deleting some of yours stories and reposting? If I'd known, I could probably have fixed it without your having to delete. So while I'm nosy by nature about wanting to know things, I really can help out in cases of needing to fix issues directly at the database table level.

I really like the idea of people posting things here -- questions, solutions, suggestions for enhancements, discussions on how you do things -- it's all good. Hmm, I might post polls on maintenance issues/enhancements to see what's most important to people as well. Be a good way of setting priorities.

Thanks for bringing up the question. Bet you didn't think I'd ramble for so long :-)

I *did* let you know! I e-mailed both you and Sophinisba, twice, didn't either of the e-mails go through? Uh oh. Please don't think I was keeping you out of the loop, because I did e-mail both of you early yesterday morning. Here's a copy of both messages. I still can't upload anything without this problem, so I've been dead in the water as far as uploading to the site is concerned.

E-mail #1: I started to upload my story "Spellbound" to the
archive, but when I went to preview chapter 1, it was listed under
Slashfairy's series "The Little AU: Vignettes". I couldn't find any
way to edit that out, so I deleted chapter 1 and stopped. Why would a
"parent series" be chosen for a story if the author didn't ask for it?

E-mail #2: It happened again! I tried to upload "In the Keeping of the King", and chapter 1 shows up as linked to Slashfairy's "AU" series. Are she and I mystically joined together somehow?

I didn't get either of these! How did you send and to what email addresses?

I'm not seeing anything in my bulk mail folder from you and everything that came through my lastship.org email addies appear to have forwarded to my Yahoo account.

Didn't realize you were still having a problem. I'll start working on this right away.

Weird. I sent e-mails via Gmail directly to these addresses:

Hey you two, I did get those two messages yesterday. I didn't respond because I figured Baranduin was handling it. I'm sorry I didn't realize! Glad it seems to be working better now.

I just tried to upload a story called "This is a Test". In preview, it again showed under Slashfairy's "The Little AU", and when I posted it, it didn't show up on the homepage (nor on my "manage stories" page). Maybe it's under her series? I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Very interesting! This is going to take a while.

I am able to upload as you without problem.

When I do a "preview" I get that link to Little AU but the story also uploads.

Very interesting.

Thank you so much for looking into this. How bizarre! Slashfairy was kind enough to review one of my stories, but I can't imagine that would be enough to "link" us in any way.

Nov. 11th, 2007 11:06 pm (UTC)
I doubt it.

I don't see anything obvious in the table data. So I wonder if it's the code underlying it. Am figuring out where that is. I did duplicate your preview problem in that I was adding a new story under my ID -- when I previewed it, it also showed Little AU as the series -- but then it did upload the story and did *not* attach it to the series.

Aha! *chiming in here*

When I was trying to post the first story last night, it kept showing as part the Little AU series too, but I was struggling at the time with trying to get all the character names up (now figured out - I have to double-click on the series and type, not just single-click) so I just thought WhatEVer, and ignored it. It wasn't there after I posted, just in the preview.

I might have seen it there when I posted the second story this morning, but I'm not sure.

The plot thickens! Thank you for reporting this! I think the Little AU so far is the only series that has a subseries within it. Very interesting.

Nov. 11th, 2007 11:28 pm (UTC)
Hmmm. My Shire Morns series will be having those too, when I start to load them. Let me know if you want me to load some of those if you need to check anything. I was putting the stand-alones in first.
baranduin
Nov. 11th, 2007 11:35 pm (UTC)
I think it would be very interesting if you do that. Just enough to establish the parent series and one subseries. Thanks!

Nov. 12th, 2007 12:08 am (UTC)
OK, did so. Didn't see anything about Little AU, either, this time.:D

But one thing I did notice is that both of the two parts I loaded show as Chapter 1 in the summaries. I did mark them as Chapters 1 and 2, but that only shows in the body of the story, and just by looking at the summaries, you wouldn't know which to click on first - actually, it looks like a duplication, except for the word count.

Also, there was nothing for me to click on to indicate that it was a multi-chaptered story - did I miss something? Or should I have loaded this as a second series within the Shire Morns series, and can I do that?

*is confuzzled*

How did you upload chapter 2? Did you click on the "Add Chapter" link in the "Manage Stories" screen?

Nov. 12th, 2007 01:55 am (UTC)
Well, that did it, and everything's where it ought to be. Thankee!

FWIW, when I loaded the second story, the Little AU once again showed as the series name in the preview. Once I uploaded it, that name was gone.
baranduin
Nov. 12th, 2007 01:56 am (UTC)
good.

Thanks for noting the Little AU is still loitering. I'm thinking there might be something amiss in the preview story module. Am looking at that piece.

Nov. 11th, 2007 11:21 pm (UTC)
Just to confirm -- you can preview (with the Little AU showing as the series) but you cannot actually upload?

Okay, we're getting somewhere now. I just uploaded "And the Stars Will Sing Your Name". In the preview it showed Slashfairy's AU, but it uploaded fine, and doesn't show AU anymore. Works for me! I'm sorry this is taking up so much of your time. Uploading the story *now* seems to remove that linking, unlike yesterday.

I'll remove the "TEST" stories when you say it's okay. I see that one of them is BDSM, you rascal. :)

I see that one of them is BDSM, you rascal. :)

I could not resist :-)

Glad you're back in business.

Don't worry about my time and don't apologize again for bringing issues to my attention. This is what I signed on for and I knew there would be issues. It's the nature of systems to never be perfect :-)

I see that LJ is going to be incredibly helpful for bringing to light issues. I'm going to make a post about this one and start an "issues" category for memories. When I figure out solutions and all or document things formally, that'll go in the Wiki ... but discussions are really good here.

Thanks!

Hello! *waves*

I'm glad the comm is up & running & evidently already proving useful! :-) Good idea too about the GJ backup.

I'll be uploading more fanfic to the main site once I've figured out a few things.

Excellent for this kind of thing -- am thinking this is where the discussion happens around issues and enhancements. Then once they're closed out, document in the Wiki?

Has anyone else reported problems with the review alerts? Whenever I receive a review, or receive a comment to a review I've left, I'm sent a link to a strange-looking page that has all the homepage headings on it in a vertical list (logout, account info, top tens, etc.) but they're not links, and I'm not taken to the site or to the review. I always have to log on to the site independently, try to figure out which story was reviewed, click on the review itself, and see it (and respond, if applicable) that way.

Nov. 14th, 2007 09:15 pm (UTC)
Hm. No. Will check -- I think all my alerts to go an email I don't check often, so I'll check on that.

How delightful. Thanks!
